In our equivalent of your bac, the A levels, we just get grades A B C etc, so it wouldn't work there.

Yes, I would definitely go for "with distinction" myself. The download time depends on the Internet connection but is usually a fast process. The thing is in UK, as being interviewed by someone who does not necessarely has a clue how our French school's system works for instance no one did really understand what 'mention' meant, even less it you put 'mention bien'.
I have never heard "with honours" used for any exams other than university level. People would certainly know just what you meant though, and given that we're translating a foreign qualification I don't think we could say that "with honours" is wrong.
